Pomegranate Fiber offers added nutrients to a variety of food applications, continuing POM Wonderful’s commitment to better-for-you ingredients

POM Wonderful, a worldwide leader of California-grown pomegranates and No. 1 pomegranate juice in North America, announced the addition of Pomegranate Fiber to its growing specialty ingredients lineup. The Pomegranate Fiber, which is upcycled from POM Wonderful pomegranate husks after juicing, is a GRAS, fiber-dense powder that can be used in a variety of food applications, including crackers, sauces, dressings, baked goods and plant-based food.

Pomegranate Fiber is made under POM Wonderful’s growing Specialty Ingredients division, which provides raw ingredients to suppliers across the food and beverage industry. Pomegranate Fiber has numerous culinary benefits — it can help draw out flavour and colour, and in baked goods, the powder enhances browning, which ultimately reduces cook times. It has soluble and insoluble fiber plus antioxidant goodness and polyphenols.

Pomegranate Fiber is made from upcycled materials using the husk of pomegranate fruit. POM Wonderful uses a proprietary method to press whole pomegranates to create POM 100 % Pomegranate Juice. After the initial press, the husks are then pressure extracted to create POMxL, a concentrated liquid extract that is also part of POM’s specialty ingredient line-up — the remaining pomegranate husk is dried and milled to create Pomegranate Fiber.

The addition of the Pomegranate Fiber comes on the heels of POMxL’s Upcycled Certification, further underscoring POM Wonderful’s commitment to sustainability and product innovation.

Sustainability is at the forefront for POM Wonderful. In 2020, POM Wonderful launched the Innovation Challenge, offering $1 million in funding and development resources to innovators who could develop an economical and environmentally friendly solution to upcycle its 60,000 tons of pomegranate husks. In 2022, POM Wonderful transitioned all its 16oz bottles of POM Wonderful juices to 100 % rPET (recycled plastic)* and completed work on its solar farm, which provides more than 90 % of the company’s electricity needs for its Del Rey, California processing facility.

To date, The Wonderful Company and its owners, Stewart and Lynda Resnick, have invested more than $1.3 billion in environmental sustainability initiatives to help fight climate change. This commitment includes the historic $750 million gift from the Resnicks to the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) in support of the school’s environmental sustainability research.

Euromed’s natural ingredient Pomanox® shows potential to help reduce food intake

According to a recently published clinical study by the department of Dietetics, Nutrition and Biological Sciences, those supplementing with Euromed’s natural extract Pomanox® showed significantly lower levels of hunger and a desire to eat, as well as higher levels of satiety, compared to a placebo group.

In the preliminary, independent, placebo-controlled study conducted at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh1, twenty-eight healthy subjects were given either three-week supplementation with Pomanox® or a placebo. During week three, satiety parameters were determined on a testing day after participants ingested breakfast and lunch with pomegranate juice (PJ). The results suggest that subjects in the Pomanox® group with the PJ preload were generally more satisfied than those given the placebo. Participants were also less hungry after Pomanox® intake with PJ during the meal than those who consumed placebo juice and capsules. Scores from the visual analogue scales (VAS), which record subjective sensations, showed significantly lower levels of hunger and a desire to eat, as well as higher levels of fullness and satisfaction, thus greater levels of satiety in participants consuming Pomanox® with PJ, compared to the placebo. These participants also liked the smell of the meal significantly more than the placebo group. Interestingly, the consumption of pomegranate extract was associated with a significantly lower amount of food intake during the satiety session compared with the placebo group.

While preliminary, these findings confirm the appetite-regulating effect of polyphenol-rich extracts reported in previous studies, suggesting possible novel new approaches to reducing risk factors for obesity and compulsive eating, and providing more enjoyable meals while dieting.

Canadian Black River Juice launched a pure pomegranate juice. Made from high quality concentrated pomegranate juice sourced from Iran, where the pomegranate is native to. Canadian-owned and operated, Black River Juice had its humble beginnings in the cherry orchards of Prince Edward County. The next generation of beer refreshment available in the Pacific Northwest in 2018

Radeberger Gruppe USA, an importer of brands of its parent company Radeberger Gruppe in Germany, the leading German brewing group, today announced its latest innovation in beer – Schöfferhofer Pomegranate – the world’s first Hefeweizen pomegranate beer.

A deliciously refreshing beverage option, Schöfferhofer Pomegranate is the latest line extension from Schöfferhofer, made of 50 % authentic unfiltered German Hefeweizen and 50 % pomegranate juice, and an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 2.5 % for a crisp taste that’s easy to drink.  Schöfferhofer Pomegranate follows the widely successful Schöfferhofer Grapefruit product to market, which has enjoyed tremendous growth since its debut in 2014, and is now available nationwide at grocery, c-stores and off-premise retail locations, as well as on-draught at restaurants and bars.

Schöfferhofer Pomegranate will be exclusively offered in 6-pack bottles to off-trade locations in the Pacific Northwest region, including Oregon, Washington and Utah beginning in January, 2018. This is the first time this beer is available in bottles; it is currently being served on-draught at Walt Disney World’s Epcot World Showcase, in the country of Germany, where park-goers have been enjoying the beer since earlier this year.
